Hi! I’m Mal

I’m an artist, wife, and mother of two young boys. My favourite thing in the world is being with my family. We live and play and create on Treaty 6 Territory (Saskatoon, SK.) I am of blended Métis and European/Settler ancestry and I’m a citizen of the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan.

I have been an artist/maker for as long as I can remember and I’ve experimented with a ton of different mediums. My beadworking journey began in 2018 and since then it’s been my main creative focus. I love that beadworking is slow, intentional, and methodical. It requires an incredible amount of patience and attention to detail. I love that each tiny bead is an important piece of the larger design.

I also really love drawing and painting. My illustrations and paintings often involve dot work/pointilism and floral or nature patterns that are reminiscent of Métis beadwork. I am most inspired by my family, my culture and worldview, my connection to nature, and my love of colour and whimsy.

Art is an integral part of my own self-care and healing. It is also the way that I stay connected with my Métis culture. Through my work, I hope to increase Indigenous visibility and preserve traditional Métis beadwork and dot art for future generations.

If you’re still reading this, thank you. Supporting my family while creating art is my dream come true and I couldn’t do it without my beautiful community!

xoxo
